Ask the AI about any sentence

A translation tells you what a sentence means. The chat tells you why it was said that way. While a card is showing, you can ask the assistant anything about that sentence, in your own language.

Open the chat

  1. With a card on screen, press the speech-bubble button in the bottom bar (“Ask the assistant about this sentence”).
  2. Type your question in the field that says “Ask about this sentence…” and press Enter.
  3. Read the answer, ask a follow-up, and press Esc (or the button again) to close the chat when you’re done.

The video stays paused the whole time. The assistant already knows the sentence, its translation, the vocabulary and the grammar notes on the card, plus what you’ve asked so far — so you can write short questions like “why past tense here?”.

Questions worth asking

  • “Why is this verb form used?”
  • “Is this phrase polite, casual or rude? Who could I say it to?”
  • “What’s the difference between this word and the one from the last sentence?”
  • “Give me three more sentences using this pattern.”
  • “How would a textbook say this, compared to how she said it?”
  • “Break down the last word for me, character by character.”

Your chats are kept with the sentence

Every exchange is saved together with the sentence. On the Dashboard’s Sessions page the chat appears under the card it belongs to, so a good explanation is never lost. To remove one, right-click the sentence there and choose Clear this chat.

Good to know

  • Chat is about the sentence on the card. It is a tutor for that line, not a general assistant, and it has no access to the web or to your screen.
  • Very long questions are trimmed (at about 2,000 characters), and in a long thread the assistant works from the most recent messages. Everything you see stays in your history regardless.
  • Chat uses a little of your allowance, like everything that calls the AI.
  • It keeps working while the session is suspended, so you can pause for ads and finish your conversation.
