Study history

Your study history: heatmap, sessions and saved audio

Every sentence you finish is kept — the text, the vocabulary and grammar, both audio clips and any chat about it — so an evening with a series — or a lesson with your class — leaves you with something to review. It is all stored locally on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded.

Open the Dashboard

Click the menu-bar icon and choose Dashboard…. It is an ordinary window with a sidebar: Overview, Sessions, Subtitles and Settings. While it’s open, RainbowSay appears in the Dock and in ⌘Tab like any other app.

Overview: streaks and the heatmap

Choose Listening, Speaking or Subtitles at the top; everything below follows.

  • Stat tiles — your Current streak and Longest streak in days, total Sessions, Sentences (for Subtitles: Minutes subtitled) and Session time.
  • Activity heatmap — the last 53 weeks, one cell per day, brighter the more you did that day: sentences for Listening and Speaking, minutes for Subtitles. Each kind is drawn in its own color — blue, green, magenta. Hover a day for its sessions, sentences, chats and time.

A streak counts consecutive days with activity of that kind — a short session is enough to keep it alive.

Sessions: every sentence, replayable

The Sessions page holds your Listening and Speaking history.

  • On the left, sessions are grouped under Today, Yesterday and earlier dates, each with a colored dot for its kind, its language pair and start time. Filter with All | Listening | Speaking.
  • Select one to see its sentences as cards — the same cards you saw live, with Original and Translation replay, the word-by-word highlight, and the chat you had about that sentence. Sort them Newest first or Oldest first.

It makes a good ten-minute review: open yesterday’s session, replay each Original, and see how much you now catch without looking.

Subtitles sessions have their own page, with a timeline and player: Review saved subtitle sessions.

Delete things

  • A whole session: point at it in the list, press its ×, then press Delete? to confirm. A session that’s still running can’t be deleted until you stop it.
  • One sentence: right-click its card and choose Delete this sentence. Its vocabulary, grammar notes, chat and audio go with it, and your totals and heatmap are adjusted. When a session’s last sentence goes, the session goes too.
  • One chat: right-click the card and choose Clear this chat.

Deleting is permanent — there’s no trash to restore from.

Turn saving off

Saving is a setting per session kind, on by default:

  • Listening and Speaking: Settings then Session then Listening then Storage then Save sessions (and the same under Speaking).
  • Subtitles: Settings then Session then Subtitles then Storage, where Save sessions and Save audio (original and translations) are separate switches.

Turning it off takes effect immediately, and sessions you already saved are kept.

Where your data lives

Your history is in a folder named after the app inside ~/Library/Application Support/ in your home folder: a single database file with the text, plus a Sessions folder holding the audio, one subfolder per session. To get there, choose Go → Go to Folder… in Finder and paste the path.

  • It’s included in a normal Time Machine backup of your Mac.
  • It stays on this Mac: your account carries your plan and usage between computers, but not your history.
  • Deleting from the Dashboard is the safe way to remove things; avoid editing the folder by hand while the app is running.

What the service does and doesn’t receive is described in the Privacy Policy.
